By LEORA BROYDO VESTEL
The motivation to create the new ArmorLite compact fluorescent light bulb came to Tom Irvine, the chief executive of Florida-based Clear-Lite Holdings, Inc., after a lamp was knocked over in his 5-year-old son’s bedroom, breaking the CFL bulb.
Mr. Irvine’s company manufactures fluorescent lights, so, of course, he knew they contain a small amount of mercury—a toxic substance—and that exposure to the mercury is possible if the light breaks.
